"In his first new songs in 16yrs, the Split Enz founder draws a line all the way back to Mental Notes "-Nick Bollinger,NZ Listener.
When it comes to under-appreciated, local music heroes it's hard to go past a man who spent time in such groundbreaking & commercially successful acts as Split Enz, Suburban Reptiles, The Swingers & Schnell Fenster.
It was back in '72 when that man, Phil Judd, alongside Tim Finn, founded one of our greatest bands, Split Enz, gaining fame not only for their angular & peculiar arty pop folk, but also their eccentric behaviour, wacky clothes, makeup & crazy hairstyles. Unfortunately, Judd left the band in '77, briefly rejoining in '78 before finally calling it a day. After playing with Auckland punk band Suburban Reptiles & being briefly linked with The Enemy & Toy Love, Judd formed The Swingers & recorded one of the greatest New Zealand songs of all time: 'Counting the Beat' before disbanding in '82 & releasing a solo album, 'Private Lives'- it would be a further 24yrs until the troubled wonder released another solo album... - though in the late 80s he formed Schnell Fenster, including former Split Enz alumni-Nigel Griggs, Noel Crombie & Eddie Rayner. They lasted a couple of albums, before eventually imploding due to the health issues of many in the group. Which brings us to 2006 & Mr Phudd & His Novelty Act - the latest piece of crazy pop genius to ramble on out of Phil Judd's topsy turvy mind.Feedback has been astounding, with many comparing Mr Phudd to Judd's work from his days with Split Enz.
"Judd has taken his music career full-circle, creating a series of songs that embraces every aspect of his past while standing firmly in the present, eyes towards the future... It'd be unfair to say that this is a stunning return to form since he's never really lost it in the first place. He remains one of the most original talents in the music business." AllMusic.com
