Whirimako Black is New Zealand's most acclaimed Maori language singer and her Holy Trinity Cathedral concert marks the very first time one of her performances has been captured for broadcast and subsequent release on DVD. 'An Evening With Whirimako Black' showcases songs from both her 'Kura Huna' & 'Tangihaku' albums and is also the first time that the principal artists & arrangers from both albums have performed these works "live" with her. Joel Haines on guitar brought his exquisite playing to songs from 'Tangihaku' and Russel Walder on oboe wove pure magic for 'Kura Huna's' epic and moving soundscapes. Both delivered exceptional performances, but Whirimako's voice was the real star on the night. Whirimako Black's albums have been met with critical acclaim in New Zealand and around the world. Her busy tour schedule this year sees her performing all kinds of events, from the WOMAD and AK07 festivals this summer (2007) to the Hamilton Gardens Festival, Soundsplash and the Christchurch Jazz Festival. She has an extraordinary voice that has been described as "...a rare and delicate instrument" and has an awe-inspiring command of the Maori language.
