The late Kohine Ponika wrote some of the most popular Maori songs ever written; yet few know that these songs, written over a period of 50 years, were all the work of one composer who could not read a note of music. Over the years hundreds of kapa haka groups have sung Kohine's songs to a simple beat that squeezed out the music. The arrangements on this CD bring out the timeless music in Kohine's songs. "Ka Haku Au" is a sonata of what Kohine Ponika knew her music could become.
