A brand new album from three of New Zealand Jazz’s leading figures Alan Broadbent, Frank Gibson, and Putter Smith. All three have had hugely important careers playing with a multitude of greats ranging from Chet Baker, John Scofield, and Errol Garner to Natalie Cole, Dusty Springfield, and Burt Bacharach. Together Again is an album of originals such as Sonny’s Step, Continuity, and This One’s For Bud, intermingled with a handful of standards such as Charlie Parker’s Relaxin’ at Camarillo, Lee Morgan’s Ceora, and Sonny Reed’s Teef.Frank Gibson hatched this project several years ago when he wanted to get together with his long time cohorts on a trip to the West Coast of America. The album was recorded in LA in January 2008. The quality is, as you would expect, first class. All three have performed together for decades and this relationship shines through in every track. The mood here is very free flowing, melodic, and easy on the ear.Joining the trio on the album is Jazz Saxophonist Chuck Manning who offers another dimension to the soundscape taking solos effortlessly, and VR Smith who sings on the sultry Heart’s Desire.
'As always, Broadbent is first and foremost a lyric player, and without being condescending, his compositions – four of them – stand up remarkably well against the heavyweights of Charlie Parker’s Relaxin’ at Camarillo, Lee Morgan’s Ceora, and Johnny Mercer and Jimmy Van Heusen’s I Thought About You. With a Grammy Award for the Natalie Cole album Unforgettable, Broadbent can now take time to make more albums as accessible as this.' (Colin Morris, Dominion Post)
