Remember Parihaka was written while NZ composer Anthony Ritchie was Composer-in-residence with the Dunedin Sinfonia, in 1994. It was first performed in that year. The work is a short and evocative piece that commemorates the shameful events at Parihaka in 1881, where government troops forcibly took over a Maori Pa and sent many of its inhabitants to prison. The slow opening is peaceful, like a sun rise, Flutes and oboes announce a chant-like theme, based on an actual song composed at the time of the incident. At the heart of the piece the various melodic ideas come together over a grinding, relentless bass, building to a climax. Also featured on the album is the FLUTE CONCERTO and DOUBLE CONCERTO FOR BASS CLARINET & CELLO, along with the Opus 91 COMING TO IT for narrator and orchestra with poems by Sam Hunt.
