Bird & other songs composed and sung in Maori by Hirini Melbourne ,with actual recorded New Zealand birdsong.
Hirini Melbourne is both composer and singer on this recording. He devoted his life to promoting the Maori language, culture and music.
Dr. Melbourne was a dean and associate professor at the School of Maori and Pacific Development at Waikato University, Hamilton. As well as being a singer he became an expert in traditional Maori instruments, performing live on the marae and in concert with the noted ethnomusicologist Richard Nunns. For his services to music he was made an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit in the 2003 New Year's Honours List.
