The music featured in this recording represents a cross section of traditional and contemporary music of the Maori people of New Zealand. From the masculine harmonies and vigorous Haka of Te Aute, to the distinctive singing of St Joseph's Maori Girls' College who enjoy the distinction of having sold more recordings worldwide than any other Maori group. Under the direction of their college principal and musical director Georgina Kingi this, their latest recording yet again features that special sound for which the college has become renowned. Te Aute College is situated in the delightful countryside of the Hawkes Bay region in the village of Pukehou. Founded in 1854 as a boarding school for young men, the college has provided this country with numerous politicians and statesmen.The college has long enjoyed a reputation for its high standard of music. Well over 100 voices were recorded in the school's magnificent new meeting house which boasts superb accoustics that enhance the vocal efforts of the performers.
