Korean born Jazz pianist Young Um learned classical piano from the age of
four. At the age of fourteen she performed the Mozart piano concerto with the
Bu-Cheon Symphony Orchestra at the Hoam Art hall in Korea. In 2001
Young moved to NZ and gained a Bachelor of Music from Massey University. Young
has performed at many local venues and concerts including North Shore’s Winter
Jazz Series, and Auckland’s Jazz in the Domain concerts. Young has
spent the last couple of years composing tunes for her debut recording DISTANCE.
For the album Young collaborated with one of Auckland's finest rhythm sections,
JASON ORME on drums (Bluetrain,Nairobi Trio, Peter Urlich) and acoustic bassist
OLIVIER HOLLAND (Nathan Haines, Whirimako Black and Caitlin Smith). The
album includes appearances from the fine jazz trumpet of NEVILLE GRENVILLE, the
warm silky vocals of CATHERINE TUNKS and smooth saxophone of CHRIS MASON-
BATTLEY. "A long overdue debut album from one of New Zealand's bright young
talents… From the poised opening nod to Bill Evans, to the Asian influence of
her own "Chen-Chen", and a witty re-vamp of Dizzy's "Woody'n'you", this is a
fascinating collection of songs from the Auckland-based Korean." - Phil
