Highly anticipated 2017 debut album from Ria Hall.
Ria Hall has spent five years making Rules of Engagement since the release of her self-titled debut EP, which won Best Māori Album at the New Zealand Music Awards. Hall has since made a name for herself as a member of Fly My Pretties, appearing on tracks with Stan Walker and as a host on Māori Televison.
Rules of Engagement was produced by Electric Wire Hustle, Che Fu, Kings, Laughton Kora and Tiki Taane.
Sonically, the album moves effortlessly from hip-hop beats to lush soundscapes and soulful crooning. Hall’s incredibly powerful voice shines throughout.
The album’s concept and inspiration stem from the New Zealand Wars of the 1800s, specifically the Battle of Gate Pā (Pukehinahina) on 29 April 1864. The album is released prior to the inaugural Raa Maumahara National Day of Commemoration on October 28.
Most recent single Barely Know premiered on Radio New Zealand with great support from Flava, Mai and student radio.
