Parallel 37 is a hugely important NZ Jazz album. Recorded in the early 80s, this album features an all-star lineup including NZ jazz greats Brian Smith, Mike Nock, and Frank Gibson, collaborating with guitar legend John Scofield, vibraphone pioneer Milt Jackson, Steve Erquiaga & Emily Remler.
The project naturally occurred with the international artists all happening to be in NZ at the same time. All gathering together in Auckland, Parallel 37 was the result (the title comes from the 37th Parrallel, the position of Auckland on the world map). This album is an important product of the jazz scene at the time. Instantly recognisable with a purposeful flow, the album highlights the wealth of talent on show.
The re-issue is also hugely significant as it features bonus tracks from Emily Remler, which were not on the original album. These recordings were her last before her premature death in Sydney in 1990.
