Dam Native’s seminal 1997 album ‘Kaupapa Driven Rhymes Uplifted’, widely considered to be one of the greatest hip hop albums to come out of Aotearoa. Kaupapa Driven Rhymes Uplifted, as an album, was revolutionary, not just for hip-hop in Aotearoa, but for popular music as a whole, due to its fusion of hip-hop and te reo Māori.
The music focused on themes associated with being Māori, the rapping incorporated te reo, and the album’s symbolism had a strong Māori focus as well, including the album’s iconic cover, which featured member Danny Haimona holding a tokotoko - a carved walking stick.
