November 2025 release from Frenzy, 72 tracks! Like the other releases in this series it
comes with a chronological month by
month booklet which for the first time
documents the year that New Zealand
music came of age.
On New Years Day 1963, Ray Columbus & The Invaders rolled into Auckland, having gone as far as they could in their home
base of Christchurch. With their sharp suits, Fender guitars, and all. They hit a scene dominated by instrumental combos and turned it on its
head. Their energy lifted the bar, sending every local group scrambling to find a singer.
The year that followed was electric. 1963 produced more locally recorded singles than any other a record that wouldnt be matched for thirty
years. The catalyst was Viking Records, newly driven by A&R man Ron Dalton and his ambitious plan to conquer the local and international
market. Dalton made bold moves, first luring guitarist Peter Posa away from Eldred Stebbings Zodiac label, then poaching Herma Keil & The Keil
Isles two of New Zealands biggest stars. His smooth salesman pitch and big promises soon had others following.
But Stebbing wasnt one to take a hit lying down. Within days hed signed Hermas cousin Freddie Keil and his band, The Kavaliers, and replaced
Posa with an emerging young guitarist named Gray Bartlett. The rivalry between Viking and Zodiac sparked a recording boom a full-blown
label war that flooded the market with fresh local releases.
