Possibly the most highly anticipated release ever in New Zealand music, the studio debut from Fat Freddy's debuted at number 1 on the NZ album charts. At the 2005 New Zealand Music Awards Fat Freddy's Drop collected the awards for People's Choice,Best Group,Best Album and Best Aotearoa Roots Album.A veritable super group of NZ musical talent, Fat Freddy's Drop is made up of members of groups such as Trinity Roots, Ebb & Bongmaster Inc., while a number of the group also pursue solo careers and mash up their influences into a diverse palette of bulging heavy funk, deviant jazz, deep dub and skanking roots reggae.DJ Fitchie aka Mu is rated New Zealand’s premier producer and as leader of the countries most uncompromising band, he drives the Freddy's pace from his MPC2000 sampler, mashing up bouncing beats and bottom heavy basslines for each tune that is a journey within a journey.Joe Dukie aka Dallas Tamaira, is the lyricist and singing sensation whose stage name / alter ego is drawn from his father Joe, also a singer, and his grandfather, a musician nicknamed Dukie after Duke Ellington. Heavily influenced by Bill Withers, Dallas’ resonant lyrics and sweet vocals are hypnotizing. The booty shaking horn section bring the jazz to Fat Freddy's Drop. Meeting at Wellington’s acclaimed Jazz School in the mid-nineties they’ve been at the core of a new musical movement in New Zealand via popular NZ bands such as The Black Seeds, Trinity Roots and of course Fat Freddy's Drop.
