Al Hunter started out performing in Blues and Soul bands in the late sixties and seventies before heeding the call of the Lost Highway in the eighties.Gifted with a voice equally at home with story-telling narratives and soaring ballads, and a strong set of his own material he set about forming a band that featured some of New Zealands finest. His 1987 debut album "Neon Cowboy"(currently unavailable) was recorded on a limited budget (hence electronic rhythm section) by Stuart Pearce ( Hello Sailor etc etc) and featured Dave Dobbyn guesting on a couple of tracks. The Al Hunter Band built a strong following in Auckland via their Saturday afternoon residency which invariably ended with a whiskey-fueled Hunter dancing on tables while playing guitar. It was this line up that recorded the bulk of the Singer album in a live for radio recording session. This album featured 12 original songs as well as tracks by Bob Dylan and Elvis. 'The Singer 'won critical acclaim and included the Top 5 single 'There's A Blue Sky Waiting For Me'. The album is generally acknowledged as a landmark album in NZ Country music .Highly recommended
